Abstract/Contents: | "Grasslands of the Great Plains, once among the most extensive and floristically rich communities in North America, are now among the most reduced due to post-settlement activities. Man-induced disturbance has resulted in displacement of native plants and encroachment of exotic species. Grassland ecosystems have the potential to provide high quality forage for livestock, habitat for wildlife, repository of diverse native plant germplasm, water for rural and urban users and recreation. Weed interference is a limiting factor in restoring grassland species. Studies were designed to determine weed management strategies that facilitate warm-season grass establishment in cropland and leafy spurge-infested rangeland. Experiments were conducted on cropland sites near Mead and Clay Center, NE to determine the effect of atrazine, imazapyr, and imazethapyr on big bluestem, little bluestem and switchgrass establishment. Imazethapyr at 0.07 or 0.11 kg ai/ha applied at planting resulted in stands of big bluestem and little bluestem that were similar to stands established where atrazine was applied. Experiments were conducted on leafy spurge-infested rangeland near Ainsworth and Ansley, Nebraska to determine the effect of sulfometuron and/or imazapyr on big bluestem, switchgrass and indiangrass establishment. Imazapyr at 0.56 kg/ha plus sulfometron at 0.1 kg ai/ha applied in the fall was optimum treatment for big bluestem and switchgrass establishment and suppression of leafy spurge and exotic cool-season grasses. These results provide evidence that imidazolinone herbicides can be an important component of grassland restoration strategies." |
