Abstract/Contents: | "An efficient rootzone must have three complex qualities: 1. Permeability to water and air, 2. Ability to hold water, 3. Shear strength. For shear strength the appropriate standards have still not actually been specified, although it is to some extent defined in the current German DIN standard through other parameters. It has now proved necessary to assemble data, by measurements, in order to characterize shear strength more precisely. Shear strength is normally measured with a penetrometer, with studded ring shear apparatus or with a shear vane. In a turf sports field the penetrometer is most likely to measure surface compaction or the amount of thatch. The studded ring apparatus either gives information on the surface itself or the part of the rootzone close to the surface, or reduces the number of random samples if the shear strength of a relatively undisturbed deeper rootzone layer is being investigated. The shear vane however, permits numerous measurements in a short time without any digging, and also makes possible a good comparison between laboratory and field measurements. The factors which determine shear strength are discussed in this paper, together with a range of data from laboratory on pure sand and on various rootzone mixtures: measurements in the field were mainly on Cell-system and DIN-standard pitches. The standard for comparison was the ready-mixed rootzone material 'Lavaterr' which is known to have satisfactory shear strength. From the range of values obtained with the Geonor shear vane are derived the following minimum values for satisfactory rootzone shear strength: 1. In laboratory tests > 0.15/ 0.18 kg/cm₂, 2. On areas actually receiving wear, in the rootzone layer between 5 and 10 cm deep > 0.70/ 0.75 kg/cm₂ (1 kg/cm₂ = 98.0665 kPa)." |
