Abstract/Contents: | "Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea 'Ky 31' Schreb.) plants were treated with radioactive mefluidide (sp. ac. 107,524 dpm/ug) on the proximal one-third of the uppermost, fully expanded leaf. Three plants were harvested 3 and 6 days after treatment at which time the treated leaves were washed with 0.01 mM unlabeled mefluidide followed by 80% methanol. Each plant was sectioned, combusted and analyzed for radioactivity. Three days after treatment 12.9% of the applied radioactivity was absorbed by tall fescue and by 6 days 24.9% was absorbed. Less than 1% of the applied radioactivity was translocated after 3 and 6 days. Higher concentrations of the 14C-label were found in the upper leaves of tall fescue after 3 days than in the stem and roots; however, 6 days after treatment the 14C-label was evenly distributed throughout the plant. Tall fescue grown in nutrient solution was treated with 0, 0.28, 0.56, and 1.12 kg/ha mefluidide. After 2 weeks six plants from each treatment were sectioned into root and shoot, dried, and weighed. The remaining six plants from each treatment were moved to a cold room maintained at 1 C for 5 days, then returned to 29 C for 7 days before harvesting the root and shoot for dry weight analysis. Root mass of tall fescue treated with 1.12 kg/ha was decreased 53.6% compared to the control, but shoot mass was not reduced by mefluidide. Tall fescue treated with 0.28, 0.56, and 1.12 kg/ha followed by cold treatment decreased root mass 28.2, 37.6, and 23.9%, respectively, compared to the control; whereas, shoot mass was decreased 15.5, 24.3, and 27.2%, respectively. Tall fescue grown in the greenhouse was treated with 0, 0.28, and 0.56 kg/ha mefluidide. Twenty plants were clipped 7 days after treatment, 20 were clipped 7 and 10 days after treatment, and 20 were clipped 7, 10, and 14 days after treatment. All plants were harvested 7 days after the last clipping, sectioned into root and shoot, dried, and weighed. There was no significant reduction in root or shoot mass of tall fescue treated with mefluidide and cut once. Tall fescue treated with mefluidide and clipped 7 and 10 and 7, 10, and 14 days after treatment was lower in both root and shoot mass than the control." |
