Abstract/Contents: | Data are given on heavy metal contents of arable, grassland, vineyard, urban garden, forest and floodplain soils in Hesse. In pot trials in which soluble salts of the metals were added to slightly contaminated soils with low pH and clay content, Cd uptake by lettuce and Italian ryegrass was up to 8-fold higher in pot trials than in field conditions at similar levels of contamination, indicating the suitability of the pot conditions for comparing potential uptake by different crops. Further trials with spinach, lettuce, rape, carrots, beans, ryegrass and wheat showed high Cd and Pb conc. in leaves and low conc. in seed/grain. Uptake of Zn and Cd from contaminated soil by oats was reduced by liming and by a higher soil clay content. |
