Abstract/Contents:The objective of this study was to screen buffalograss germplasm for resistance to mealybugs. Resistant plants would then be used in the breeding and development of new buffalograss cultivars. Plugs from 38 buffalograss selections showing good turfgrass quality were harvested from plots at Mead, NE in December 1991 and brought into the greenhouse. These selections were scheduled to be evaluated for flowering charateristics during the winter. On February 11, 1992, mealybugs were detected on one of the plants. By May 19, numerous mealybugs were observed so a preliminary rating for mealybug infestation was made. On June 19, plants were rated for the presence of mealybugs and for the amount of regrowth since being clipped on May 19, using a 1-9 scale where 1=no growth. On July 8th mealybugs were rated again. Table 2 shows the susceptability of buffalograss to mealybugs.
