Abstract/Contents: | In a pot experiment the uptake of magnesium by Lolium multiflorum from a range of soils was highly correlated with the extractable Mg content of the soils. Removal of Mg was greater in treatments receiving a higher level of nitrogen fertilizer; these differences were more marked where Mg fertilizer had been applied. Mg uptake exceeded the fall in extractable Mg in some soils, indicating that ryegrass also took up non-exchangeable Mg, particularly at the higher N level. In other soils Mg uptake was less than the fall in extractable Mg, suggesting fixation of Mg in these soils. |
