Abstract/Contents: | "Evaluation of fungicides for control of brown patch of tall fescue, 1997: The trial was mowed at 2.5 in., irrigated as needed, and fertilized with 1.5 lb N/1000 ft² as urea in Oct & Dec. This soil is a Maury silt loam and is maintained near pH 7. Barricade herbicide was applied at 0.24 oz/1000 ft². Plots measured 4 ft X 4 ft and were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. All plots were separated by at least 2 ft untreated border area. Plots were sprayed with a CO₂-powered hand-held sprayer fitted with Spray Systems 8003E flat fan nozzles delivering 2.5 gal/1000 ft² during early morning hours. Control plots were treated with water. Treatments were intiated on 28 May 97 and repeated on 25 Jun and 23 Jul. The percentage of plot surface showing symptoms of brown patch was rated visually on 3 Jul and on 28 Jul. Turf quality was assessed on a 1-9 scale. All data were analyzed using ANOVA and the Waller-Duncan k-ratio test (P=0.05, k=100). Percent data were transformed via the angular transformation. Brown patch developed from natural inoculum and was the only significant determinant of poor turf quality. No disease developed in Jun. Disease development in Jul was light to moderate until late in the month, when substantial disease allowed meaningful evaluation of treatment efficacy. By 28 Jul, symptoms were evident of both foliar blighting as well as thinning and tiller death due to crown infections; both phases of the disease were documented microscopically. Only turf quality was assessed in Aug, since direct assessments of percent plot affected by brown patch became difficult due to the continued development of thinning related to crown infections." |
