Abstract/Contents: | Compares the pesticide policy of the United States with the policy of the countries of the European Union. Discusses differences in the basic principles of the pesticide regulatory systems in the U.S. and the European Union. Suggests that the pesticide policy in the U.S. is based on what would be an acceptable exposure for people and the environment, not causing unreasonable harm, while the pesticide policy of the European Union follows a precautionary principle based on proof of safety, not proof of harm. Includes differences between the United States and the European Union in risk/benefit analysis and in considerations of alternatives to chemical pesticides. |
