Abstract/Contents: | Defines Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and describes the components of a good IPM program. These include: identification and knowledge of the managed insect, monitoring the pests' populations, using action thresholds to know when pests need to be controlled, the use of cultural methods to mitigate pests, and the conservation and use of biological controls. Explains beneficial cultural practices involving site (soil) preparation, soil pH, organic matter, resistant grasses, mowing height, irrigation, fertilization, liming, and aeration. Explains biological controls involving entomopathogenic nematodes, pesticides, bacteria, fungi, fermentation products derived from soil bacteria, insect hormone mimic, and other controls. |
