Abstract/Contents: | "Sixty-six plants of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were selected based on medium-late maturity and healthy dark-green appearance from a spaced-plant nursery and moved to an isolation block at the Turfgrass Research Facility, North Brunswick, NJ in May 1987." "The plot was located in a low area near trees and bushes which provided a favorable habitat for wild rabbits." "[The] results suggest that rabbits prefer to eat endophyte-free plants over endophyte-containing plants." The authors suggest that some sort of feeding deterrent in the endophyte-containing plants must smell or taste bad to rabbits, but more research is necessary to identify what it is. |
