| Abstract/Contents: | "Low temperature stress is an important factor restricting annual bluegrass (Poa annua var. reptans) culture on golf greens in northern climates. We assessed biochemical changes and freezing tolerance of annual bluegrass ecotypes acclimated under both controlled and natural environmental conditions. Freezing tests were performed in programmed freezes and freezing tolerance expressed as the lethal temperature for 50% of the plants varied between <-29 and -14 C depending on ecotypes and acclimation conditions. We documented quantitative and qualitative changes in soluble sugars, fructans, amino acids and thermostable proteins in cold acclimated annual bluegrass. These biochemical changes will be discussed in relationship with freezing tolerance of annual bluegrass ecotypes." |
