Abstract/Contents: | "This experiment was conducted on an old established lawn located in Somerset County to assess the performance of pyrethroid formulations against a HCB population. The turfgrass area consisted primarily of fine leafed fescue. Treatment plots were 5 x 6 ft arranged in a RCB design and replicated three times. Granular formulations were applied with a hand held shaker with top dressing sand used to provide even distribution of product. At treatment time (20 Jul), the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temperature, 73°F; soil temperature at 1 inch depth, 75°F; soil temperature at 2 inch depth, 74°F; RH, 79%; amount of thatch, 0.125 inch; soil textural class, silt loam; soil particle size analysis: 22.9% sand, 59.0% silt, 18.0% clay; water content (percent by wt), 15.4%; organic matter, 5.8%; water pH, 7.0; soil pH, 5.3; application time, mid morning; soil and thatch dry; and partly cloudy skies. Each replicate was irrigated in with 0.11 inch water immediately after treatment. HCB were sampled by driving a 6 inch-diam stainless steel cylinder into the turf, filling it with water, and counting the number of HCB nymphs and adults floating to the surface during a 10-min period on 27 Jul and 4 Aug. Two floatation samples were taken randomly from each replicate, and the total number of HCB from each sample was recorded and converted to a ft² count. An average of 30.0 HCB nymphs and adults/ft² was recorded 20 Jul before treatment. All treatments provided significant control on 27 Jul while six treatments provided significant control on 4 Aug. Talstar PL G and DTM 0.1G GLS, applied at the high rate, provided excellent control against all stages of HCB. No phytotoxicity was noted." |
