| Abstract/Contents: | "Common bermudagrass is a persistent and troublesome weed in tall fescue horse race courses, particularly in Southern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S. Common bermudagrass and other weeds can reduce both turf quality and the athletic performance of the horses. This one-year field evaluation was conducted on a tall fescue (cultivar 'K-31') steeplechase race course at Brookhill Farm in Clayton, North Carolina. The objective was to aggressively reduce the common bermudagrass population in the tall fescue race course during one season. One and one-half hectares of the five hectares race course were treated with a tank-mix herbicide treatment of ethofumesate plus fenoxaprop-p-ethyl at 1.7 and 0.16 kg ai per ha; respectively. From June through September 1999, five applications were delivered at 21-day intervals. No phytotoxicity or injury was observed on the tall fescue. Prior to the steeplechase race event on 6 May 2000, the treated area was evaluated for weed control and turf quality. Common bermudagrass suppression was considered acceptable. On a one to ten scale (where ten equals best), the National Steeplechase Association rated the race course a nine for smoothness and a nine for turf conditions." |
