Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the annual maintenance field day set up by John Cunningham, superintendent at Martin Downs Country Club in Palm City, Florida. States that "Cunningham started holding the annual field day three years ago when he wanted to draw his green committee members to the maintenance facility and educate them on the various roles of the maintenance staff." Describes how the field day works, stating "during the event, crew members deliver short, 10-minute presentations on topics such as aerification, equipment usage, irrigation, mowing and chemical application. The list also includes information of interest to golfers, including scheduling and tournament preparation. In each of the presentations, the crew members explain their specialty areas...Crew members not directly involved in presenting information serve as group leaders, taking the small groups to each station and introducing the speakers. Others coordinate and prepare the area to be used for the meal the crew prepares and serves following the presentations." Also discusses the planning of the event, stating that "Cunningham says one of the first tasks in planning the field day is finding the appropriate time to hold the event. He has held the event at both the beginning and end of the golf season and has found the beginning of the season the most effective in terms of scheduling and interest level...Another important aspect of planning this event is determining which topics to present. Cummingham generally organizes seven different topics, which allows him to evenly space groups around the maintenance area. He says the ideas come from both the membership and the crew." Discusses the benefits of the field day, including golfers and facility members gaining "information on the maintenance practices they see taking place on the golf courses and the cost involved in maintaining the facility...[and] the positive message it sends to Cunningham's employer and other facility leaders." States that "finding an effective way to communicate with golfers, involve the entire maintenance staff in a project and boost the image of the golf course superintendent can be a challenge. Holding a maintenance field day is one vehicle that can drive home these objectives. It's an event the golfers, crew and facility staff will look forward to each year." |
