Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the development of golf course resorts by Native American tribes in the San Diego area. Describes the construction of the Barona Valley Ranch golf course and resort by the Barona Band of the Mission Indians. Details the building of "a $225 million Las Vegas-style resort adjacent to its new $12 million golf course." States that the "tribe plans to capitalize on San Diego's tourism industry, which pulls visitors from throughout California and other nearby states." Also describes the purchase of the Singing Hills Resort and Country Club by the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. Discusses the tribe's addition of the resort that has been in operation since 1956 and "has two restaurants, banquet facilities, and a wedding chapel in addition to golf and a hotel." States that "Indian tribes definately have an advantage...tribes can offer lower green fees because their costs are lower, and they can build courses on their reservations and avoid having to buy land or go through the government approval process, since the reservations are sovereign nations that are exempt from local ordinances." |
