Abstract/Contents:"In recent years reports of johnsongrass infestations in Michigan have increased. Results of current studies comparing morphological differences of johnsongrass plants grown from seed collected from 3 locations in Michigan indicate the existence of two distinct biotypes. Plants grown from seed collected in the southern range of johnsongrass in Michigan have an average leaf width of 24.4 mm, stem circumference of 18.4 mm, l7.3 leaves per culm and produce 454 grams ofrhizomes. Plants grown from seed collected from the northern range of johnsongrass in Michigan have an average leaf width of 38.2 mm, stem circumference of 27.0 mm, 14.0 leaves per culm and produce 33 grams of rhizomes. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate possible differences in efficacy of several herbicide treatments for control of the northern versus southern johnsongrass biotypes. Glyphgosate,SC-0224 and HOE-66lwere applied at 0.84 and 1.68 Kg/Ha in a carrier volume of 140 and 280 L/Ha when johnsongrass was 45-60 cm in height and at the boot to head stage to evaluate the effects of these factors on non-selective control of the two johnsongrass biotypes. DPX-Y6202, fluazifop-butyl(+), haloxyfop, and sethoxydim were applied at 0.14 and 0.28 Kg/Ha as a single application when johnsongrass was 30 cm (early postemergence),or 45 cm (late postemergence) in height or as a split application to evaluate these treatments for control of both johnsongrass biotypes in soybeans. All soybean treatments were applied with 2.34 L/Ha crop oil concentrate. Control of the northern biotype with glyphosate, SC-0224, and HOE-66l was most effective when applied in a carrier volume of 280 L/Ha while treatments applied in a carrier volume of 140/HA provided the most effective control of the southern biotype. Control of both johnsongrass biotypes was significantly better when these treatments were applied at the boot to head stage than at 45-60 cm in height. Early postemergence applications of DPX-Y6202, fluazifop-butyl(+), haloxyfop, and sethoxydim provided significantly better control of the northern than the southern biotype 42 days after treatment. Split applications and single applications of these herbicides applied late postemergence were effective in providing control of both johnsongrass biotypes.
