Abstract/Contents: | "The cost of maintaining the landscape is expensive, especially if traditional methods of working are followed. A large part of the cost is for labour and its on-costs, with machinery a further but significant part. Whilst it is possible to reduce labour and to make savings by more efficient use of a smaller number of employees, there are greater gains to be made by using modern equipment or materials. It is possible to make a useful reduction of costs in the urban environment by using growth retardants: in rural areas it may not be quite so simple because a less high standard is called for. This paper describes the areas where savings can best be found, methods of working, materials to use and the problems which might be faced. Grassland is the primary area for discussion because it can be controlled and, being the largest area of expense in most urban areas, gives the most scope. The more labour-intensive area [areas] are likely to yield the best dividends for effort. Single-species hedges will also allow large savings in labour and costs. Savings can be made in a satisfactory way, but for the manager with the casual or half-hearted approach there are problems. Good training and supervision are needed." |
