Question: | ""My hybrid bermudagrass has a 'stunted' look to it. The leaves are all bunched together along shortened stolons (runners or stems). No growth regulators have been used in the area, but it sure looks like it."" |
Answer/Response: | ""The sample sent in had the classic signs of 'bermudagrass mites'. A close look under the leaf sheaths revealed dozens of tiny white, cigar-shaped Eriophyid mites. Their feeding often causes growth distortion in plants (in this case shortening of the internodes or the length of stem between leave groupings). The UC Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Guidelines for turfgrass lists treating the turf with the miticide Kelthane, or with Diazinon. Some cultivars are known to be resistant; 'TifDwarf' for example. 'Tifway' is susceptible."" |
