Abstract/Contents: | "Field evaluation of fungicides for turfgrass disease management is often complicated by a lack of or non-uniform disease development. We found that by applying pathogen inoculum, and covering field turf areas with Seed Guard, uniform Pythium blight, caused by P. aphanidermatum, developed. In a field study evaluating eight fungicide treatments applied to plots of perennial ryegrass, P. aphanidermatum cultured on tall fescue seed and air dried, was applied with a drop spreader calibrated to deliver 5 lb of inoculum per 1000 sq ft. To induce microenvironmental conditions that more favor Pythium blight development, the plot area was covered with Seed Guard (A. M. Leonard, Inc., Piqua, OH) for 48 hr post-inoculation. Seed Guard is a white spunbounded polypropylene material used in turfgrass establishment to increase seed germination. Temperatures during the evaluation were below normal during May through September with cool nights and low relative humidity, conditions not conducive to natural Pythium blight development. Pythium blight becomes severe during hot (29-35 degrees C), humid weather when night temperatures are above 20 degrees C. The artificial inoculation and canopy modification with Seed Guard induced Pythium blight injury which was rated as moderate in July and moderately severe in August." |
