Abstract/Contents:1989 update of test established 5/11/88 to evaluate 2 replications of 4 mixtures of annual and perennial wildflowers. Mixtures are Bloomers, 80% Bloomers/20% Bighorn, Low Growing Mix, and Midwest. Irrigation was provided as needed to maintain plant growth in 1988 with no supplemental irrigation in 1989. A table provides % wildflower ground cover on 6/9/88 and 6/8/89 and visual quality (1 to 9; 9=best) on 6/21/89. Midwest gave most consistent cover with 63 and 67% in 1988 and 89, respectively and had best quality with a 7 rating. During the second year after seeding, all of the mixes performed fairly well from late May until early July with the peak blooming period being late June. Weeds became a serious problem by the end of July and the Black-Eyed Susans were the only successful lateblooming flower that competed. Shortly after the peak flowering period, the plots became dominated by tall growing broadleaf weeds. Flowers Blooming in Mixes on 6/29/89: Bloomers - Black-Eyed Susan, Coreopsis, Corn Poppy, Prairie Coneflower, Rocket Larkspur, Catchfly, Blue Flax; 80% Bloomers/20% Bighorn - Indian Blanket, Black-Eyed Susan, Coreopsis, Prairie Coneflower, Corn Poppy, Catchfly, Rocket Larkspur, Blue Flax, Johnny Jump-Up; Low Growing Mix - Coreopsis, Catchfly, Dwarf Cornflower, Johnny Jump-Up; Midwest Mix - Black-Eyed Susan, Yarrow, Prairie Coneflower, Coreopsis, Catchfly, Purple Coneflower, Dwarf Cornflower.
