| Abstract/Contents: | Lists and briefly outlines the factors governing water needs of a given turf sports surface, such as location, climate, the composition of the soil, relief and vegetation. Emphasizes that turf supporting layers built close to the surface greatly aid water conservation. Discusses other aspects of turf care that affect water needs of the turf, such as carefully controlled fertilization, use of natural waters both above and below the soil surface, overall water quality and influences of waters with a high content of salt. Includes effects of the chemicals Sodium, Chloride, Carbonate, Boron, Iron, Sulfate and Nitrate upon turfgrasses and top soils. Mobile and stationary irrigation systems are evaluated and compared in terms of effectiveness, overall cost and water conservation. Finally, the special water needs of the diverse surface areas of a golfcourse are outlined. |
