Abstract/Contents:"The main aim of this project was to bring together a living collection of all the types of couch available in commerce in Australia together with ecotypes known to be used in particular areas even if not commercially available. In addition, a small number of other couch ecotypes which showed promising characteristics were also included. Each accession was carefully purified by propagation from small pieces of stolon taken from different parts of the material submitted and where there was more than one collection under the same varietal name, the resulting materials were carefully compared. The aim was successfully achieved and a collection of about 195 couch accessions is now maintained at ATRI, including all the main commercial varieties and important ecotypes from all States and Territories of Australia. The purpose of this HSNA project was to bring together as a living collection samples of all the vegetatively propagated (i.e. non-seeded) forms of couch available commercially or known to be used for the establishment of greens and lawns in Australia, to classify the collection and to seek recognitiion for it as a permanent reference collection. As a result of this work, approximately forty commercially significant types are now available as a living reference collection of named pure cultures to serve as authentic material to meet industry needs. In addition, a significant collection of other couch material has been assembled for use in future breeding work. The collection as a whole contains more than 195 accessions in pure cultures."
