Abstract/Contents:This article discusses a "new variety of native couch grass that is a gardener's dream." The benefits of this new variety includes - thickness, toughness, survival without watering while maintaining the green color, and it can compost well. Also comments on the ability to grow sideways instead of vertically and needs less than half the mowing of any of the low-maintenance grasses currently on the market. "You can't kill it," said Mr. Ian McIver, the director of the Australian Turfgrass Research Institute, which discovered the grass, known as C-29, on the banks of a river near Newcastle. The article explains the testing of several new varieties of faster-growing couch grasses by the institute, which states the main objectives was to develop grasses that produced fewer clippings. The institute is conducting a three-year, $50,000 project to establish a living museum of native couch grasses, and are all specialized varieties of the same species, Cynodon dactylon. There are 180 varieties of couch grass in the glasshouse museum, but Mr. McIver estimates there are still more than 400 waiting to be discovered around Australia.
