Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the implications and dangers of persistent herbicides, like clopyralid and picloram, in compost. Profiles clopyralid and picloram, stating that clopyralid is a herbicide that is used in a variety of commercial products, including Dow AgroScience's Confront. Clopyralid damage in plants includes "loss of 'apical dominance'" which can "prevent fruit set." Examines the detrimental effects caused by herbicide contamination at the Spokane Regional Compost Facility and Washington State University. States that "relying on the herbicide label restrictions is not enough. Herbicides from feedstocks treated with clopyralid can remain in compost for sale to the public, even though the label may have been followed." Recommends that "the composting industry urges herbicide manufacturers to rexamine the chemistry and formulation of existing and new herbicides for persistence in the environment so that recycling and composting are not at risk." |
