Abstract/Contents:Evaluated 3 replications each of Rebel and Kenhy Festuca arundinacea, and Derby Lolium perenne, seeded in Sept. 1980. Four nitrogen (ammonium nitrate) rates were used, including no nitrogen, 2 lb N/1000 ft2 applied in March and May, 2 lb N applied in Sept. and Nov. and 4 lb N applied in March, May, Sept and Nov. Each of 3 replications per variety is maintained at a 1.5 and 3 inch cutting height; half the plots are irrigated as needed during the summer and half received no supplemental irrigation. From 1980-1983, the best turf quality was obtained at the lowest cutting height. However, the best quality was generally maintained at the highest cutting height, and there was no appreciable brown patch damage. Brown patch had always been much more severe in the higher cut plots and this greatly affected quality. Rebel F. arundinacea had the highest quality evaluation averages in both irrigated and not irrigated plots. Results are provided in a table.
