Abstract/Contents:Discusses the history and philosophy of golf course maintenance. Defines a golf course in terms of land and vegetation. Discusses "architecture is the management of terrain and greenkeeping is the management of turf." Describes how golf spread throughout Scotland and England in the late 1800's, and how available land at the time determined golf course architecture. Discusses how inland courses had natural turf due to poor soil, and how it has since been converted to poa annua. Lists the characteristics which golf greens are judged subjectively. Discusses the need to know the nature of the turf in order make more accurate judgements about the characteristics of the green. Details why fine turf has diminished in England du to the wrong turf maintenance. Describes how turf characteristicis of were determined by weather conditions. Discusses the "firmness" of agrostis/festuca turf and its affect on the stopping power of a golf ball. Discusses the speed and "trueness" of greens, and what affects them. Also discusses aditional questions, and making opinions on past and current turf in response to these quesitons. Discusses the tasks of groundskeepers "to persuade you that there are serious deficiencies with the turf on which we are now playing golf."
