Abstract/Contents:Discusses soft spike and metal spike golf shoes, stating that "traditional metal spikes on golf shoes have long been acknowledged as a significant source of wear on golf greens, and a number of studies from the USA have shown that metal spikes caused significant damage to the turf and soil as well as disruption to the surface." Presents a trial done to "investigate the turf damage caused by the different types of golf spike and whether this translated into a variation of the playing quality of the surface." Describes the golf spikes that were examined and the procedures of the trial. Presents the results of the trial for turf quality, ground cover, ball roll and deviation and traction/grip properties. States that "this study showed that the use of alternative spikes generally caused less turf damage than conventional metal spikes and the results were influenced by the style of alternative spike. However, this turf damage was not trslated to large differences in playing quality in terms of ball roll and ball deviation."
