Abstract/Contents: | Effects of spot spraying yellow nutsedge in bermudagrass using two herbicides at Spindletop Farm in Kentucky. Treatments were: Daconate 6 at 2 lb ai/A in a .21% solution, Scepter (Image) at 1/2 lb ai/A in a .053% solution, Scepter at 1/2 lb ai/A + Daconate 6 at 2 lb ai/A combined in a .26% solution, untreated check. Healthy nutsedge plants scattered throughout the turf were marked in four replications. The treatments were sprayed on July 30, 1987 with a hand-trigger type nozzle adjusted to a medium coarse mist. The spray covered about 1 sq.ft. when held 1.5 ft. above the grass. Each squirt applied 1 ml of solution, and 10 ml were applied to each spot to deliver the required amount of active ingredient. The spots were not mowed for the duration of the test. One week after application, the treatments containing MSMA had eliminated the nutsedge without injuring the bermudagrass. The Scepter slightly yellowed the nutsedge and halted its growth without affecting the bermudagrass. Within the next two weeks, the Scepter-treated nutsedge began to show tip burning, and within a month the nutsedge was gone. No nutsedge recovery was observed in any treatment, but by the end of two months, about half the nutsedge in the check spots had been crowded out by the bermudagrass. Bermudagrass in the Daconate 6 and check spots vigorously went to seed within three weeks of treatment while Scepter completely prevented seedhead formation. After two months Scepter plots had very few seedheads. No injury to bermudagrass occurred in any treatment. |
