Abstract/Contents: | 1983 test which includes Rebel tall fescue, Kenhy tall fescue, and Derby perennial ryegrass. Seeded in September 1980, in a split plot design, these grasses are maintained at four nitrogen rates, two mowing heights, and two irrigation levels. Nitrogen (ammonium nitrate) treatments include no nitrogen, 2 lbs N per 1000 sq ft applied in March and May, 2 lbs N applied in September and November, and 4 lbs N applied in March, May, September, and November. Each of three replications per variety is maintained at a 1.5 and 3-inch height. Also half the plots are irrigated as needed during the summer and half received no supplemental irrigation. Tables provide visual quality and summer brown patch ratings and tiller density results. Best turf quality has been obtained at the lowest mowing height when irrigation was applied. With no irrigation, height does not appear to be important to quality. The highest nitrogen treatments were not always superior since brown patch was usually more severe at the high N levels. Brown patch most severely affected the non-irrigated tall fescue mowed at the highest height and fertilized with high N. For both tall fescue and ryegrass, irrigation greatly reduced brown patch damage. Depending on the management regime, tiller density ranged from 4 to 8, 3 to 6, and 5 to 11 tillers per square inch for Rebel tall fescue, Kenhy tall fescue, and Derby perennial ryegrass, respectively. |
